I've been reading a lot of comics by Alan Moore recently.

V for Vendetta - Tragic thing is that I was reading this comic while the London Bomb Blasts occured. What if things took a turn for the worse. Imagine UK going the Nazi way after the bombings. Instead of the Fuhrer they have a boob that falls in love with a computer that is almost a shade of Big Brother (1984 anyone?). Along the way comes a character in the vein of Mule (the mutant in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series). An X-Factor of sorts. An Anarchist that kicks ass. Alan Moore's genius lies in the telling of a tale in 10 issues. Its poetic.
Batman? Spin on this!

Supreme - What if a Super Hero was thrust into a yet to be written comic book? Plots all waiting to be triggered. Catch being that he has a variety of experiences that as far as he is concerned, has already occured. The comic consists of a series of flash backs that is actually a tribute to the golden age of comics (in the U.S.A.). But in the case of Supreme, time moves on forward, backwards & ducks into occasional loops & spirals. What stands out in this series is the way paradoxes in time travel & infinite universes are handled. Read it to be blown away. No loose ends here. In short Supreme is ASTOUNDING! & funny as a costume party in hell.

Watchmen - Super Heroes are thrown out of their jobs by the government. 20 odd years later someone is bumping them of one by one. A Who-Dunnit? that explores retirement blues & insecurities of washed up & not yet washed up super heroes. Sounds funny?. Maybe, but its one hell of read. The characters may be superheroes, but they are still human & have their short comings. The plot twists & turns through 12 issues. Super Villains usually threaten the world with nuclear war or something more believable (in a comic). But you haven't read anything this awesome. The master plan is so damn dastardly.
Shades of Black & Gloom with a bright ending.
